Owner and licensed yoga instructor, Kristin Davidson, came to us wanting a logo design that would not only reflect her personality but also stand out amongst the countless other lotuses and “om” symbols that have come to define the yoga world.
The challenge that we came across with this particular project is the “yoga cliche”. When one thinks of yoga, images of downward dogs, the om symbol and a lotus immediately come to mind. With countless logos containing the same basic imagery, the question was: How do we bring a fresh perspective to a redundant and preconceived business concept.
After a number of different design ideas and concept sketches, we decided on a simple two colored henna based lotus illustration. Initially the idea of using a lotus seemed a bit ironic, considering the fact that we were trying to break free of the stereotypical yoga design. However, by changing the perspective of the lotus from a side to top view, all of a sudden, we had an iconic symbol for the business. Inspired by the simplicity and elegance of traditional henna body art, we chose to maintain a loose hand drawn style with a number of imperfections in the flower which reflects Kristin’s playful and easygoing personality. The limited color palette consisting of teal (her favorite color) and gold harmoniously compliment each other, adding a sense of classic elegance to the overall design. For the typography, we modified the Papyrus typeface and added a small henna flourish to add a bit of interest as well as balance to the logo’s typography.
