New Year’s Day

Acrylic Painting with digital finishes. New Year’s Eve in Hawaii is a unique cultural experience, and something that needs to be experienced in person to truly understand. Growing up in Hawaii, my memories of New Year’s revolved primarily around firecrackers, which could be anything from sparklers and pop pops to Chinese firecrackers and illegal aerials, with literally everything in between.  Whether it was at my grandparent’s house on Kauai or Aunty’s in Kalihi, from sundown to midnight everyone from toddlers to grandparents would be popping firecrackers…which, needless to say, created a ton of garbage, which would litter the streets for days despite people’s best efforts to bring in the New Year sweeping it all up.
